ABOUT US
Uza Sensei is a Kyoshi 7th Dan, Original Okinawan Karate teacher in Beikoku-Shidokan / Shorin-Ryu. Uza Sensei began his training in Okinawa more than 30 years ago. Studying under Sensei Seikichi Iha, Hanashi 10 dan; formerly the highest ranked Okinawan master living in the United States.
The Journey of a Martial Artist: The Life of Yujiro Uza
Born and raised in the historic city of Naha, Okinawa, the birthplace of karate, Yujiro Uza, 7th Dan Hanshi, found his passion for martial arts at an early age. His introduction to karate came through a family friend, Isamu Aragaki Sensei, a respected master in the art. While his early years saw him exploring different interests—including a deep love for baseball—karate remained an ever-present force in his life.
It wasn’t until university, where he studied in Nagasaki Prefecture, that he rekindled his dedication to the art. This decision would shape his future, leading him down a lifelong path of discipline, self-improvement, and teaching.
Training Under Legends
Over the decades, Uza trained under some of Okinawa’s most revered martial artists. Among them were Seikichi Iha, Hanshi 10th Dan in Okinawa Kobayashi Ryu Karatedo Beikoku Shidokan, who was later recognized as an Okinawa Prefecture Designated Intangible Cultural Property Holder in Karate-do. Another influential teacher was Koichi (Hirokazu) Nakasone, Hanshi 10th Dan and most highly regarded direct disciple of Iha who embodied the principles of traditional Okinawan practical karate.
A Calling to Teach
With a deep respect for Okinawan heritage, Uza felt a strong duty to pass on his knowledge. In 2003, he established his first dojo in Dallas, Texas, later moving it to Chicago in 2008. His mission was clear: to spread the teachings of traditional Okinawan karate, emphasizing self-defense and peace. Recognized for his dedication, he was appointed as a Private Ambassador for Okinawan Karate, strengthening the bridge between Okinawa and the United States.
At his Chicago dojo, he welcomes students ranging from 10 to 54 years old, focusing not only on technical skill but also on values like cooperation, friendship, learning, and patience. With classes taught in English, Spanish, and Japanese, he ensures that the art of Okinawan karate remains accessible to a diverse community.
Achievements and Legacy
Over the years, Uza has performed in front of thousands of spectators, demonstrating the strength and beauty of karate at festivals hosted by the Japan Association and the Okinawa Prefectural Association. His students undergo rigorous elevation tests twice a year, and he hosts an annual seminar in Michigan, keeping the spirit of Okinawan karate alive.
One of his most fulfilling moments as a teacher came from witnessing a student in his mid-50s, who initially struggled to sit in a traditional seiza position due to knee issues, gradually overcome his limitations. For Uza, these personal victories define his legacy far more than any tournament or demonstration.
Beyond the Dojo
Outside of karate, Uza is passionate about cars, motorcycles, and baseball, interests that reflect his appreciation for both precision and speed. Yet, his greatest joy remains in witnessing his students’ growth, no matter how small.
He continues to draw inspiration from his late teacher, Seikichi Iha, and the legendary Koichi Nakasone, both of whom embodied the highest ranks of Okinawan karate. Their teachings fuel his lifelong pursuit of mastery and his dedication to sharing this art with the world.
Words of Wisdom from Uza Sensei
For those interested in joining a dojo or starting karate, his advice is simple: “Take the first step. Attend a free trial, observe, and experience the atmosphere. The most important thing is to try, even if just once.”
With over 30 years of experience in the United States, Yujiro Uza, 7th Dan Hanshi, remains steadfast in his mission—to preserve and promote the true essence of Okinawan karate, ensuring that this centuries-old tradition continues to thrive for generations to come.

A teacher of teachers, Sensei Seikichi Iha began his karate training in Okinawa more than 60 years ago, studying under the renowned masters, Sensei Shinpan Gusukuma, and Sensei Katsuya Miyahira.

Iha Sensei believed that encouraging the development of cooperation, respect, friendship and healthy living through karate is of great importance. This philosophy was at the core of his instruction and daily interactions with his students.
